Do Tradies Need to Be on Instagram?

You've probably heard that you should be posting on Instagram for your trade business. Maybe you even started an account, posted a few times, and then let it go quiet. Here's an honest take on whether it's actually worth your time.

Instagram can work, but it takes consistent effort

If you enjoy taking photos and posting them, Instagram can be a genuinely useful tool for a trade business. Good before and after shots, progress photos, finished jobs. Visual trades like painting, tiling, landscaping, and renovation work especially well on Instagram because the results are so easy to show.

The problem is the algorithm

Instagram rewards accounts that post regularly. If you go quiet for a month because you're flat out on a job, your reach drops and you basically have to start rebuilding your audience again. For a busy tradie, that's a frustrating cycle. You're busiest when you have the least time to post, and slowest when you have the most.

Instagram doesn't replace a website

The biggest difference between Instagram and a website is intent. People scrolling Instagram aren't necessarily looking for a tradie right now. People searching Google for a plumber in their suburb are ready to call someone immediately. That intent is worth a lot more to your business.

So should you bother?

If you enjoy it and can keep it up, yes. If it feels like a chore and you keep letting it go quiet, your time is better spent making sure your website and Google Business Profile are solid. Get those right first. Instagram is a bonus, not a foundation.
