Going Out on Your Own as a Tradie? Here's What to Sort First.

Making the move from working for someone else to running your own show is one of the biggest decisions you can make as a tradie. Most people who do it don't regret it. But the early days can be chaotic if you haven't sorted out the basics first.

Get your ABN sorted

First thing. You need an ABN to invoice anyone legally. It takes about ten minutes online through the Australian Business Register and you usually get your number the same day. Sort this before you do anything else.

Check your licensing requirements in Victoria

Not all trades require a licence in Victoria but many do. Electricians, plumbers, builders, and a number of other trades need to be registered with the Victorian Building Authority or another relevant body before they can operate independently. Check what applies to your trade before you start taking on work.

Get public liability insurance

This is non-negotiable. If something goes wrong on a job and you're not insured, you're personally on the hook for it. Most builders and project managers will also ask to see your certificate of currency before you're allowed on site. Get this sorted before you start working.

Set up a way for customers to find you

Word of mouth will carry you for a while, especially if you're coming out of a good workplace with solid relationships. But at some point you'll need a pipeline of work beyond your immediate network. A Google Business Profile and a simple website are the two things that will help most people find you when they're actively looking.

Going out on your own is a grind at the start but for most tradies who stick at it, it pays off. Get the basics right early and the rest follows.
