Why Tradies Lose Work to Competitors with Worse Skills

One of the most frustrating things for a good tradie is watching a competitor with inferior skills win jobs that should have gone your way. It happens more often than it should, and it usually comes down to one thing. Online presence.

Customers can't see your skills before they call

A customer searching online has no idea how good you are at your job until they've seen your work. What they can see is your website, your reviews, and how professional you look online. If your competitor has a slick site with 60 reviews and you've got a basic Facebook page with a handful of posts from three years ago, they're getting the call regardless of who's actually better.

Your reputation online lags behind your real reputation

The people who've worked with you know how good you are. But that knowledge doesn't automatically translate into an online presence. You have to actively build it. Getting past customers to leave reviews, putting your work on your website, showing up consistently in local search results.

The good news

Most tradies are still not doing much online. The bar isn't that high. A proper website, a complete Google Business Profile, and a handful of good reviews puts you ahead of the majority of your competition in most Victorian suburbs. You don't need to be a marketing expert. You just need to show up better than the person next to you.

Your skills got you this far. A bit of work on your online presence is what helps more customers actually find you.
